Nonna’s Pane di Pasqua

4 Cup of Flour (Sifted)

4 tsp. Baking Powder

1 cup of Sugar

2 Eggs

½ Cup Lard/Crisco – Cut into small pieces

4 tsp. Vanilla

1 Cup Milk

2 Egg Yolks beaten  

Nonpareil Colored Sprinkles

Colored Easter Eggs


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Sift together the flour, baking powder and sugar.  Make a well. In the well put the eggs, the lard and the vanilla and stir with a fork.  Working from the outer walls of the wall using the fork, work the flour into the wet mixture slowly. Add the milk a little at a time and form into a dough.   You might have to add a little more flour to the surface if the dough gets too wet.  Use your judgement.  Let the dough rest for 15 minutes.  

Cut the dough in half and form into a bread.  You can make them smaller if you wish.  Brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg yolk. Cover with the colored sprinkles.  Put an egg or two in the middle of the bread.  You can eliminate this step all together if you wish.

Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and put in the oven for 25 minutes until the bread is firm. Cool and you can store in an airtight container.  If there are any leftover you can freeze, just make sure to cover well with Saran Wrap.
